Biography
*Eezzy*, whose real name is *Opoka Eric*, is a Ugandan recording
artist, songwriter and performer known for his distinctive blend of
Dancehall, Hip Hop and Afrobeat. Born on *21 July 1999*, Eezzy is an Acholi
artist from Northern Uganda who was born and raised in Kampala. His music
has helped bring Northern Ugandan sounds and languages to a wider Ugandan
audience.
Eezzy developed an interest in music at an early age. His musical journey
began around *2012*, when he was still in school. According to the artist,
his passion for performing grew after he began entertaining fellow students
and receiving positive reactions from those around him. What started as an
interest gradually developed into a serious ambition to become a recording
artist.
The name *Eezzy* reflects his personality. The “E” comes from his first
name, Eric, while “ezzy” is derived from the word “easy,” representing his
laid-back and easygoing character.
Eezzy initially experimented with Luganda music but later returned to his
roots in Northern Uganda, where he developed a stronger connection with the
Acholi language and culture. This experience influenced his musical
identity and helped him develop a style that combines contemporary urban
sounds with elements of his cultural background.
His professional career began gaining significant attention after he
collaborated with Northern Ugandan singer *Liama* on *“Kaimito”* in 2017.
The song helped increase his visibility within the Northern Ugandan music
scene and established him as an emerging artist to watch.
Eezzy's major breakthrough came in *2020* with the release of *“Tumbiza
Sound.”* The song became one of Uganda's most talked-about lockdown-era
records. Its catchy sound and commentary on the entertainment industry's
struggles during the COVID-19 restrictions connected strongly with
listeners and propelled Eezzy into the national spotlight. The song also
attracted attention from government authorities because of its
interpretation of the pandemic and public-health restrictions.
Following the success of “Tumbiza Sound,” Eezzy continued building his
catalogue with songs such as *“Abeggume,” “Mega” featuring Lydia Jazmine,
“Mummy,” “Waidaba,” “Tik Tok” featuring Naira Ali, “Aboth,” “Kuma Baa,”*
and other releases. His collaborations with established Ugandan artists
have further expanded his presence within the country's music industry.
Beyond Dancehall, Eezzy has described himself as a versatile artist capable
of working across *Dancehall, Hip Hop and Afrobeat*. His music frequently
incorporates Luganda, Acholi and English, allowing him to appeal to
audiences from different parts of Uganda.
Eezzy has also balanced his music career with education. During the early
stages of his rise to fame, he was pursuing a *Bachelor's degree in
Industrial Art and Design at Kyambogo University*, demonstrating his
determination to develop both his creative and academic abilities.
Today, Eezzy remains recognized as one of the artists associated with the
modern Northern Ugandan music movement. From his early beginnings as a
young performer to his national breakthrough with “Tumbiza Sound,” his
journey reflects persistence, cultural identity and a commitment to using
music as a means of entertainment and expression.
With his ability to blend contemporary Ugandan sounds with Northern Ugandan
influences, Eezzy continues to build his artistic identity and contribute
to the growth of Uganda's diverse music scene.
